Understanding Different Carpet Materials

There are two materials that carpets can be made up of; synthetic and natural fibers.

Synthetic fibers: these are created from multiple chemical compounds and represent the majority of carpeting products. The most common ones being nylon, polyester and polypropylene (olefin). These fibers are more durable than natural fibers. Nylon is one of the toughest when comparing durability in fibers.

Natural fibers: these fibers are created from natural grown materials which are harvested and processed into fibers. These natural fibers use materials such as wool, silk, cotton, sisal, seagrass and coir in the process of making carpets- wool being the most used. This carpet fiber is eco-friendly, however, stains are harder to remove and carpet cleaning will be very expensive meaning they require specialists.

Which one is the easiest for carpet cleaning?

Synthetic fiber carpet is easiest when carpet cleaning and they are the most durable. It stands up very well to abrasion and trauma from furniture and foot traffic. There are 3 types of carpets which are the easiest to clean:

Polyester – polyester is the most stain resistant. It is made from oil based fibers which helps repel water based products, but not oil based products.

Polypropylene (olefin) – polypropylene is known for its abrasion resistant properties and its cooperation to carpet cleaning. This type of carpet is extremely easy to clean and remove stains from. It is also quite resistant to high foot traffic, similar to nylon carpets.

Nylon – nylon is known to make carpet cleaning quick and easy. It is the most durable and is made from strong fibers, making it resistant to wear and tear and trauma from furniture. It is very cooperative when being cleaned as stains and oils can easily be removed. Due to their resistance to trauma their life span lasts longer than most carpet materials too.
